Family Annihilator David Brom released from prison today on work release

Convicted killer David Brom was quietly granted work release from the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater. He was 16 years old in 1988 when he committed one of the most disturbing familicides in U.S. history.

Brom murdered his parents and two siblings: his father Bernard (43), mother Paulette (42), brother Richard (11), and sister Diane (13), using an axe while they slept. The killings took place in Rochester, Minnesota, and shocked the nation both for the method and for the lack of clear motive beyond a reported disagreement over music and discipline.

He was sentenced to three consecutive life terms, eligible for parole after 30 years. Now 52, Brom has served 37 years.

His release does not mean freedom. Under work release, inmates are allowed to leave prison for employment while still under correctional supervision. Full release is not guaranteed.

Thoughts? Does this qualify as rehabilitation or just trigger old doubts about early release for violent juveniles?

Let’s discuss.
